Microphones

Below is a list of things to consider when dealing with microphones:

• There are various types of microphones:
  • Headset - it combines the headphone with the microphone. The advantage of this mic is that it is always at the same distance from your mouth
  • Lapel - clip to your shirt.  If you use a wireless version ensure that you are not picking up sound from other sources.
  • Shotgun - placed about the subject so that it will not be seen on camera.
  • Desktop (e.g., Blue Yeti) - used with USB or XLR connection and is great for voiceovers.
    • Make sure you are talking into the right side of the microphone

  • Get a pop filter to use with your microphone to reduce the amount of "popping" sound as your talk.
  • Adjust the "pickup" pattern. On the Blue Yeti, set is to cardioid (this is the heart shape icon) for voice overs.
  • Microphone should be 6-8 inches from your mouth.
  • If the microphone is a desktop type, place a soft material under it to reduce vibration and desk noises or mount it on a boom or scissor arm stand.
  • Talk directly into the microphone and avoid turning your head.
